Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful is a charity working towards the vision of a cleaner, greener Northern Ireland by running environmental education programmes and awareness raising campaigns, increasing volunteering opportunities and reporting on local environmental quality. Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful runs a range of awareness raising and volunteering campaigns including the BIG Spring Clean and the Clean Coasts programme as well as local environmental quality programmes such as international Eco-Schools and Blue Flag programmes, the Seaside Award, Borough Cleanliness Surveys and Live Here Love Here Green Business Awards. You can download our corporate brochure here.
Our programmes revolve around three key themes: 1) Environmental Standards; 2) Environmental Education; and 3) Engagement & Volunteering.
Environmental Standards - this strand of activities includes our cleaner neighbourhoods programmes and a wide range of environmental certifications. Under the cleaner neighbourhoods umbrella we carry out marine and terrestrial litter surveys; we act as the Secretariat for the Northern Ireland Environmental Quality Forum; as well as providing bespoke litter interventions research, training and campaign materials. Our range of environmental certifications, on the other hand, include Blue Flag for beaches and marinas, the Seaside Award and Green Coast Award, Green Flags for Parks, Green Key as well as the Green Business Award. Environmental Education - this area of activities includes our work with schools, colleges and universities across Northern Ireland to inspire a new generation of eco-conscious citizens. We locally manage Eco-Schools, EcoCampus and Eco Home as environmental education and certification programmes. Northern Ireland was the first country in the world to award an Eco-School with a Green Flag certification and in 2017, awarded its 1000th Green Flag. The Environmental Education team also run a series of eco-competitions, such as the Translink Travel Challenge, Young Reporters for the Environment, Wheelie Big Challenge, The Food Waste Challenge, Wrigley Litter Less Campaign, and Cash for Clobber. Engagement and Volunteering - we run extensive volunteering and public engagement activities, most notably under the umbrella name of 'Live Here Love Here'. These include our Adopt A Spot initiative, the BIG Spring Clean, Clean Coasts Week, Big Beach Clean and the Live Here Love Here Community Awards. Our engagement campaigns also provide aspiring volunteers with equipment, resources, advice and training. We travel the length and breadth of the country engaging community groups in green-ups, clean-ups and spruce-ups and also support communities through a Small Grants Scheme, awarding over £236,000 in 2019 alone.
